The Rectorate

Since its establishment, the Orthodox University of the Congo (UOC) has benefited from enlightened leadership, ensuring continuity in its educational and spiritual mission. The succession of its Rectors reflects a steadfast commitment to academic excellence and the promotion of Orthodox Christian values.

His Eminence Metropolitan Ignatios Madenlidis was the first Rector to lead the institution and played a decisive role during its early years, laying solid foundations for the University’s development and bringing the Orthodox Church’s vision for Congolese youth to life. Under his leadership, the University experienced significant growth, attracting students from diverse backgrounds who were eager to acquire the knowledge offered by the institution.

He was succeeded by His Eminence Metropolitan Nikephoros Konstantinou Mikragiannanitis, who continued and expanded the University’s development efforts. His administration marked a period of academic innovation, characterized by the introduction of new academic programs and the improvement of infrastructure. Metropolitan Nikephoros played a key role in establishing the UOC as a respected institution of higher education, not only in the Democratic Republic of the Congo but also across the African continent.

Subsequently, His Eminence Metropolitan Theodosios Tsitsivos Pavlou assumed the leadership of the UOC, bringing a modern vision of Orthodox education. His tenure has been characterized by the strengthening of international partnerships and the development of research projects, enabling the University to expand its engagement with the international academic community while remaining faithful to its Christian values.

Throughout these changes in leadership, Professor Théodore Fumunzanza Gimuanga has played a central role as Vice-Rector. His expertise and dedication to academic excellence have been essential in addressing the institution’s challenges. As Vice-Rector, he has served as a pillar of stability and continuity, supporting successive Rectors while ensuring the quality of education and safeguarding the integrity of the University’s mission.

Thus, the history of the Orthodox University of the Congo reflects a journey marked by wisdom and dedication, in which each Rector has contributed to building a strong and respected institution. Thanks to this succession of committed leaders, the UOC continues to shine as a center of knowledge, hope, and spirituality at the heart of Congolese society.
